Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ultrasound and is it safe?

Ultrasound is the use of high frequency sound waves to generate a picture based on the return echo of the tissue that is being imaged. This technology is very similar to radar. Ultrasound does not utilize radiation. Extensive studies over 30 years have found that ultrasound is safe. It has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is now normal throughout the United States. In 3D/4D scanning, exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D and 4D ultrasound will be similar to a diagnostic 2D scan with your doctor in terms of exposure.

Because of our medical background, we have been well trained in the importance of minimizing exposure. At Perfect Timing, we utilize techniques that bridge the gap from the world of diagnostic imaging to elective ultrasound. We ensure that the safest imaging methods are practiced.

Why should I choose Perfect Timing Ultrasound? What makes you different?

One of our owners is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer. She is currently employed with a local radiology department.  Because of her love for OB, she is specifically credentialed in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Our other owner is a registered radiologic technologist, holding her credentials with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. She also holds a Massachusetts state license with over 10 years of experience in diagnostic imaging. She is employed within the same local radiology department and holds a huge passion for OB. We have a combined experience of over 20 years in our respective fields and have undergone extensive training in elective ultrasound. While we are invested in providing families a more intimate experience to bond with their babies via elective ultrasound, our hearts still lie within our medical background. You will see elements of this throughout the services we offer as a major difference between us and other elective ultrasound facilities. The safety of you and your baby is our number priority here at Perfect Timing Ultrasound.

Does this take the place of a diagnostic medical ultrasound performed with my doctor’s order?

Perfect Timing Ultrasound is an elective ultrasound facility. Our 2D/3D/4D & HD Live prenatal services are not monitored by an obstetrician or radiologist and DO NOT, under any circumstances, take the place of your diagnostic ultrasounds or prenatal care.

*Our Ovulation Tracking services ALONE, will be interpreted by board certified, Massachusetts licensed radiologists who are accredited by the Joint Commission.

What kind of equipment do you use?

We have purchased a GE Voluson E8. This ultrasound machine is equipped with the newest technology available on the market called HDLive. This brings unprecedented anatomical realism through advanced skin illumination and shadowing techniques. This results in the most detailed look at your baby! This machine allows us to view your baby in 2D/3D as well as baby moving around in 4D!

Why do I need to provide proof of prenatal care?

As mentioned above, safety is our number one concern. While we at Perfect Timing are very well trained, we are not medical doctors. If an abnormality is suspected, your doctor will be contacted so it can be investigated with a medical ultrasound. Our 2D/3D/4D & HD Live prenatal services are not monitored by an obstetrician or radiologist and DO NOT, under any circumstances, take the place of your diagnostic ultrasounds or prenatal care.  We do not perform diagnostic prenatal ultrasounds or look for any maternal or fetal abnormalities. Our services are elective in nature and DO NOT take the place of your diagnostic ultrasounds. For these reasons, we require you to provide proof of prenatal care before you can be seen at our facility.

*Our Ovulation Tracking services ALONE, will be interpreted by board certified, Massachusetts licensed radiologists who are accredited by the Joint Commission.

However, in certain circumstances and at the tech’s discretion, we may offer ONE re-do session where you will be invited back for another ultrasound at not cost to you! Please refer to the re-do policy on our scheduling page for more information.

What is the difference between 2D/3D/4D and HDLive technologies and what can I expect the pictures to look like?

Please see the gallery below for the best explanation of each of our different technology capabilities. All of our imaging techniques utilize the same sound wave exposure. 4D is updated in real time, like a movie of baby moving around with the 3D views! Please see our video clips to experience 3D in motion!

Beautiful and clear 3D/4D images of your baby, especially baby’s face, are often seen on a third trimester ultrasound. Good 3D/4D imaging requires a co-operative baby and adequate amniotic fluid in front of the structure being imaged. Some babies press against the wall of the uterus or placenta, or they may have their arms or hands lying in front of the face. This will make obtaining 3D/4D images difficult or impossible. It is good for parents to anticipate seeing their growing baby, but not to be too disappointed if the 3D/4D images prove difficult or the images of baby’s face are impossible to get. Every effort will be made to obtain the highest quality pictures for you and your family to cherish for years to come!

First image is baby in 3D, second image is seeing baby in HD Live, and the third image is the traditional 2D ultrasound image.

What is Ovulation Tracking?

Ovulation Tracking is the use of diagnostic ultrasound to image the development and rupture of a dominant follicle. Ovulation Tracking requires several appointments per menstrual cycle. At these appointments, women will have a transvaginal ultrasound which will be interpreted by board certified, Massachusetts licensed radiologists who are accredited by the Joint Commission. At any given time during a menstrual cycle, the chances to conceive are between 20-22%. With ultrasound guided ovulation tracking, the percentage of successful conception leaps to 76% in just one cycle of ovulation tracking! The numbers increase to 98% at 6 months of ovulation tracking*. We do not diagnose fertility, we simply help to narrow down your fertile window so your chances for successful conception are greatly improved!
